Every booking through a comparison portal like Rentalcars, Discover Cars, Check24 or Billiger-Mietwagen costs you 15 to 25% commission — and that's only the visible part. You never get to see the customer, often aren't allowed to contact them directly, are bound by price-parity clauses and compete on the portal page almost entirely on price. The good news: with your own professionally branded booking site, clean SEO and reliable email delivery you win back booking after booking — without your own hosting, without a developer, without server stress. This guide shows how.
1. What portal commission really costs — the honest math
Take a typical 7-day rental at €350. At 20% portal commission, €70 are gone — per booking. At 40 portal bookings a month that's €2,800 monthly, €33,600 a year. But commission is only the start:
- You lose the customer: name, email and phone number belong to the portal. A repeat-customer relationship or a second sale is barely possible — next time the customer books through the portal again and you pay commission again.
- Price-parity pressure: many portals require that your price there is no higher than elsewhere. So you can hardly reward direct bookers with a better price.
- Pure price war: on the portal results page you stand next to 15 competitors — the decision is made almost entirely on the cheapest daily rate, not on service, reviews or brand.
- Delayed payout: the money often arrives from the portal only weeks after the rental — instead of immediately in your account.
- You carry the cancellation risk: free cancellations, disputes and chargebacks usually end up with the rental operator.
The goal is not to abolish portals entirely — they bring reach and new customers. The goal is to raise the direct-booking rate: every booking that comes directly through your site saves the full commission and turns the customer into your customer. Even 30% direct instead of 0% is, in our example, over €10,000 more per year.
2. Your own branded booking site — looks like your brand, not like a platform
The core of independence is a booking site that looks 100% like your business — and on which the customer books and pays bindingly in a few minutes. With AutoRentAI you set this up without a designer:
- Your own logo, your own colours: primary and secondary colour, logo, hero image and a badge/seal (e.g. "In business for 25 years") are yours to set. The site carries your signature, not ours.
- Your own domain with automatic SSL: the booking site runs under the address you want (e.g.
book.your-rental.com) — a single DNS entry is enough, the SSL certificate is created and renewed automatically via Let's Encrypt. - Trilingual (DE/EN/ES): titles, descriptions, trust badges, step-by-step explanation, tours and rental terms are maintained in three languages — ideal for tourism locations.
- Freely sortable content: trust seals, process steps, promo box, reviews, categories, tours and FAQ are arranged by drag-and-drop in the order that sells for you.
- Reviews on display: Trust24 widget, Google/Trustpilot embed or manually maintained customer voices — right on the booking site, where the decision is made.
The difference from a portal: on your site there are no 15 competitors next to you. The customer sees only you, your reviews, your extras, your service — and doesn't decide on the cheapest cent alone.
3. Direct payment + auto-confirm: booking and money with no middleman
A nice page alone books nothing. What matters is that the customer commits immediately — and that the money lands directly with you, not weeks later at the portal:
- Stripe straight to your account: deposit (e.g. 30%) or full payment runs through your own Stripe account. No portal sits between you and the money.
- Auto-confirm: as soon as payment goes through, the booking confirms itself and the customer automatically receives a voucher PDF and confirmation — branded to your rental, without a click from you.
- Real-time availability: the booking site pulls free stock from the same calendar that also holds your portal and phone bookings — no double bookings.
- Online check-in + deposit included: the customer uploads documents, signs digitally and places the deposit themselves — the same smooth flow described in our other articles.
For the customer it feels just as easy as a portal — except the margin stays with you. Whoever has booked directly and smoothly once is more likely to come back directly next time.
4. Getting found without a portal: the built-in SEO engine
Direct bookings only happen if customers find you without a portal. That's exactly what the booking site is built for from the ground up — you fill in fields, the system does the rest:
- SEO titles & descriptions per language: for DE/EN/ES each its own page title, meta description and keywords — with a live character counter and Google preview.
- Automatic sitemap.xml + robots.txt: generated and kept up to date without your involvement, so Google reliably finds all vehicle categories and pages.
- Rich results via Schema.org: each vehicle category is marked up as a structured product with price, availability and equipment — Google can show price and stars right in the search result. Plus CarRental company data, breadcrumbs and FAQ.
- Local SEO (geo-targeting): store region, place name and coordinates — important for "car rental [place]" searches and Google Maps.
- Search Console, Bing & Analytics: verification codes and GA4/Tag Manager can be entered directly — including a matching cookie banner.
- llms.txt for AI search: on request a machine-readable info file is generated so AI assistants (ChatGPT & co.) can recommend your rental correctly too.
A built-in SEO health check shows as a percentage score which fields are still missing (logo, address, tax ID, title, geo, FAQ …). You see at a glance how "Google-ready" your site is — no SEO degree required.
5. No hosting of your own, no server stress — everything included
Having your own website normally means: book web hosting, get an SSL certificate, apply updates, run backups, call someone when it goes down. With AutoRentAI all of that disappears — the booking site, the customer portal, the PDFs and images run on our infrastructure:
- No separate web host: booking site and admin are included in the subscription — you pay no second hosting bill and need no server of your own.
- SSL automatically: certificates are created and renewed automatically via Let's Encrypt — including for your own domain. No expiry date you can miss.
- Updates & security included: maintenance, security patches and new features arrive automatically — no maintenance window for you to organise.
- Servers in the EU: hosted in Germany and Spain — GDPR-compliant, with Stripe and SMTP2GO as the only sub-processors.
Bottom line, this replaces the classic trio of web host + web designer + maintenance contract. Instead of several invoices and contacts you have one solution that simply runs.
6. Email delivery that actually arrives (SMTP2GO)
The best booking confirmation is useless if it lands in spam. Direct bookings live on trust — and trust is built when voucher, contract and invoice arrive reliably and under your name:
- Delivery via SMTP2GO: all automatic emails (confirmation, voucher, check-in invite, payment receipt, return thank-you) go through a specialised delivery service — a markedly higher delivery rate than mail from your own mail server.
- Your own sender domain: emails come from
info@your-rental.com, not from us. Professional and on-brand. - SPF & DKIM set up with guidance: the system shows the required DNS records and checks their status at the push of a button — so Google & co. authenticate your mail and don't filter it as spam.
- Fallback included: if no own sending is (yet) set up for a domain, mail goes out reliably via the platform domain — a booking confirmation never gets stuck.
In concrete terms: the customer books directly and seconds later gets a clean confirmation from your address in their inbox (not in spam) — exactly the experience portals deliver so reliably, now under your brand.
How to ramp up the direct rate — without cutting portals overnight
Nobody has to cancel all portals from one day to the next. The smart path is to use portals as a shop window and step by step bring more bookings in directly:
- Step 1 — go live: brand the booking site, connect your own domain, fill in SEO fields, link Stripe. Realistically done in 1–2 days.
- Step 2 — link everywhere: booking URL in your Google Business Profile, Instagram bio, email signature, on invoices and in the car (QR sticker on the glovebox).
- Step 3 — win back repeat customers: the automatic "thanks for returning" email with a direct-booking link (and optionally a returning-customer code) turns portal customers into direct bookers.
- Step 4 — measure: with visitor tracking and analytics you see the direct rate rise — and can keep portals exactly where they really bring new customers.
Rule of thumb: just one in three bookings going direct instead of through a portal pays for the software many times over — the rest of the saved commission is profit.
